Pokémon 30th Celebration Sold Out on Day One: Scalpers, the Mercari Ban and How to Buy at MSRP

The Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration wave launched worldwide on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. And worldwide, it vanished from shelves within minutes: overnight queues, carts emptied mid-checkout, resale listings at two to three times MSRP. In Japan, Mercari went as far as banning sealed products of the line from its marketplace.

Before you pay 130 dollars for an Elite Trainer Box on a resale site, read this: the 25th anniversary precedent in 2021 ended with massive reprints, and three more product waves are scheduled before December. Here is what actually happened, with the MSRP list to keep handy.

What happened on September 16?

The same script played out across every time zone: the first 30th Celebration wave, seven products including the Elite Trainer Box and the Sylveon ex and Greninja ex Boxes, sold through in minutes, in stores and online alike. In the UK, Nintendo Life reports that thousands of people queued overnight outside shops.

Online, Serebii creator Joe Merrick summed up the morning in one line: "Out of stock while checking out a minute after dropping." Social media did the rest, between photos of resellers' overflowing carts and shelves stripped bare an hour after opening. "To say I'm really deflated about this hobby right now is an understatement," wrote one collector quoted by Nintendo Life.

One retailer came out looking better than the rest: Target, in the United States, enforced a one-per-SKU-per-household limit. The result, as Screen Rant noted, was that customers standing fortieth in line still walked out with their box. Proof that the problem is not how much product was printed, but how fast a handful of people grab everything when nothing stops them.

How much are scalpers charging for the 30th anniversary wave?

The numbers from the first 24 hours are dizzying. The Elite Trainer Box, priced at 49.99 dollars in the US and 55.99 euros in France, is already listed between 120 and 130 dollars on resale sites. Nintendo Life spotted listings at two to three times retail across the whole line, and TheGamer found store-exclusive products offered at up to seven times MSRP.

Two cards concentrate most of the speculation: the Futuristic Rares by YOSHIROTTEN, Mew ex 158/128 and Mewtwo ex 157/128, a rarity created for this set and reserved for these two cards alone. The set counts 128 numbered cards, every single one holofoil, plus 30 secret rares and three Mew cards numbered R, G and B outside the run. In other words, the four-figure card is a lottery ticket, not a purchase.

Why did Mercari ban 30th Celebration resales?

It is the most striking measure of this launch. Mercari, Japan's biggest consumer-to-consumer marketplace, has banned listings of sealed 30th Celebration products since September 16, until, in the platform's own words, "a safe and secure trading environment" can be restored. Single cards remain allowed: the target is clearly the resale of unopened boxes, bought never to be opened.

The platform says it is monitoring listings, deleting those that dodge the rule and restricting repeat offenders' accounts, as TheGamer reports. A move of this scale on a licence this size has next to no precedent, and it says one simple thing: even the businesses that live off resale think the situation has gone too far. Should you pay scalper prices? The 2021 precedent says no

No. Recent TCG history argues for patience, and it comes with numbers. In 2021, the 25th anniversary Celebrations set went through exactly the same panic: day-one sellouts, resale at multiples of MSRP. The Pokémon Company International answered in writing: "we are maximizing production to increase product availability upon release, and we will continue to reprint the products to replenish stock at retailers as soon as possible."

The promise was kept, and then some: 9 billion cards printed between March 2021 and March 2022, more than double the 3.7 billion of the previous year, according to figures reported by Fortune. In 2025, production reached 10 billion cards, per PokeBeach. The outcome for Celebrations: by 2022 the set sat on shelves at MSRP, and anyone who had paid triple in October regretted it. For the 30th anniversary wave, TheGamer already mentions a print run estimated at double that of recent sets. No reprint has been officially announced yet, but betting against The Pokémon Company's printing machine has historically never paid off.

When are the next chances to buy at MSRP?

This is the other reason not to overpay: the 30th anniversary celebration is a marathon, not a sprint. Three product waves are still scheduled before December, all with confirmed dates.

How do you avoid getting fleeced until then?

Four reflexes will get you through the shortage without feeding the speculation. One, know the MSRPs in the table above: any listing far beyond them is a bet on your impatience. Two, turn on stock alerts at hobby stores and big-box retailers, restocks sell fast but they do happen. Three, show up at opening time on release days, the Target lesson from September 16 applies everywhere: where a per-customer limit is enforced, the line actually moves. Four, never buy a sealed box from a private seller during the frenzy, that is precisely the behaviour Mercari just banned.
