Pokémon Legends: Z-A + Mega Dimension: One Cartridge for Everything on October 29, 2026

Published on October 1, 2026·By Antoine

The Pokémon Company announced on September 30 a new physical edition of Pokémon Legends: Z-A that puts the game and the Mega Dimension DLC on a single cartridge. It launches Thursday, October 29, 2026, runs on both Switch 2 and the original Switch, and ships with a serial code for 100 Ultra Balls.

Until now, owning the complete Z-A in a box meant buying the launch cartridge, then paying again on the eShop for the DLC. This re-release fixes that, but it raises its own questions: how much, who is it for, and what do you lose by waiting. I read the announcement in all four languages and compared the prices I could verify on October 1. Here is the breakdown.

What does the Pokémon Legends: Z-A + Mega Dimension cartridge contain?

The whole game, in the strictest sense. The back of the European box spells it out: "This product comprises the Nintendo Switch game, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack and downloadable content." The Mega Dimension DLC is on the cartridge itself, with no download code to scratch and no mandatory connection to install it.

There is also a bonus specific to this edition: a serial code to redeem through the game's Mystery Gift feature, which delivers 100 Ultra Balls in one go. It is an early-game boost rather than a treasure, but Pokémon re-releases do not always include anything, and this one does.

The story still takes place in Lumiose City, the Kalos metropolis, and the game itself does not change: same base version released on October 16, 2025, same updates. What changes is the packaging, and how much downloading it saves you.

Does the cartridge work on the original Switch?

Yes. The cartridge carries the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition logo, but it also holds the Nintendo Switch version of the game: slot it into a first-generation console and it runs the classic version of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, DLC included. The Switch 2 upgrades, resolution, frame rate and loading times, stay exclusive to the newer console.

That makes it a genuinely good Christmas pick: the box follows a kid who upgrades consoles later, with nothing to buy again. The upgrade pack is already on the cartridge, where other editions sell it separately.

How much does the bundle cost, and can you preorder it yet?

Nintendo has not announced a European price. The first US retailer listings spotted by RPG Site show 99.99 dollars, which is exactly what the game and DLC cost separately on the eShop. As of October 1, the bundle had not appeared yet at the French retailers I checked; Fnac, Micromania and Amazon only listed the launch edition.

The table says it all: a year after release, the launch cartridge sells for 42 to 60 euros in France, and the DLC costs 29.99 euros. Anyone who simply wants to play all of Z-A can get there today for 72 to 90 euros, below the bundle's expected price. The new cartridge does not win on price: it wins on being a complete object, and that argument speaks to collectors more than to players in a hurry.

Why does a real cartridge matter in the Game-Key Card era?

Because it has become rare. On the same September 30, The Pokémon Company announced the equivalent for Pokémon Pokopia: game and Expansion Pass together on October 29, but on a Game-Key Card, the format that holds no game data and forces a full download, priced at 13,380 yen and limited to Japan and South Korea. Pokopia was, as it happens, the first Nintendo title ever released on that format.

Z-A goes the other way: everything sits on the cartridge, so it can be lent, resold, and fired up in ten years without depending on a server. For a franchise whose games are collected as much as they are played, that detail counts. One oddity along the way: North America gets an integrated box art that blends the Mega Dimension artwork into the main visual, while Europe pastes a "Downloadable Content" inset over the original cover. Nintendo Life readers were not kind to the European version, and I see their point.

Is the Mega Dimension DLC worth it, ten months after release?

It is the real expansion of Z-A, released on December 10, 2025 for 29.99 euros. It reopens Lumiose City with a storyline of spatial distortions driven by the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa, whose rings serve as doors between districts. It also adds a wave of brand-new Mega Evolutions: Mega Raichu X and Y as headliners, Mega Lucario Z revealed in the trailer, and surprises like Mega Zeraora.

One thing the bundle announcement does not mention: Mega Dimension cannot be launched from the title screen. The DLC unlocks after the main story of Z-A. The complete cartridge removes the download, not the progression: plan on finishing the main campaign before you see Hoopa's first ring.

On the Pokédex side, the base game already covers a lot: the Kanto Megas are in, Mega Blastoise first among them, and the Eevee evolutions roam the streets and Wild Zones of Lumiose City, Vaporeon included, via Water Stone or in Zone 20. If that family is what brought you back to Z-A, the Vaporeon LED Pokéball on a wooden base keeps the hunt going on a shelf, and the Blastoise crystal LED Pokéball salutes the oldest Mega in the game.

Should you buy the bundle if you already own the game?

No, in most cases. If your launch cartridge already runs with the DLC bought from the eShop, this edition only brings you 100 Ultra Balls and one more box. It targets three profiles: the player who has bought nothing yet, the gift buyer who wants a Christmas package with no download step, and the collector who wants the definitive cartridge version.

The timing is no accident: the re-release lands almost exactly one year after the game came out, a month before the holidays, and the same October week as the Pokémon HOME 4.1.0 update, expected on October 7 with FireRed and LeafGreen compatibility. I covered that whole transfer operation in the article on the Pokémon Bank shutdown: October 2026 is clearly the month Nintendo puts its Pokémon in order. And if Mega Evolution as a mechanic interests you beyond Z-A, Pokémon Champions carries it online with the same stars.

While you wait for October 29, the light-up Pokéball collection stays at 29.99 € per model, the price of the DLC alone, and it requires no upgrade pack.

Frequently asked questions about the Z-A + Mega Dimension cartridge

Does the 100 Ultra Balls code have an expiry date?

The announcement gives none. Serial codes from The Pokémon Company almost always end up expiring, though: the safe move is to redeem it through Mystery Gift during your first session rather than leaving the slip in the box.

Can you start Mega Dimension right away with this cartridge?

No. The DLC unlocks after the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, complete cartridge or not. What the October 29 edition removes is the eShop step and the download, not the hours of play that lead to Hoopa.

Will the Pokopia + Expansion Pass bundle come to Europe or North America?

Nothing announces it. The boxed version of Pokémon Pokopia with its Expansion Pass is set for October 29 in Japan and South Korea, at 13,380 yen, on a Game-Key Card, with a code for a set of Berry furniture. In the West, the game and its pass remain sold separately.

Will my current save work with the new cartridge?

Yes. On Switch and Switch 2 alike, save data lives on the console, not on the cartridge. Swapping a launch cartridge for the DLC edition does not touch your progress; the game picks up where you left it.

What is the difference with the cartridge released in October 2025?

The launch cartridge contains the game alone; the October 29, 2026 one adds the Mega Dimension DLC on the card and the 100 Ultra Balls code. The game itself is identical, updates included: no content is exclusive to either box.

Does one DLC purchase cover both Switch and Switch 2?

Yes for the eShop version: buying Mega Dimension at 29.99 € covers both the Switch version and the Switch 2 Edition of the same game. That is what makes the "launch cartridge plus DLC" route as flexible as the bundle, if not as tidy in the box.
