Darkrai is National Pokédex No. 491, a Mythical Dark type standing 1.5 m and weighing 50.5 kg, with 600 base stat points. Cresselia is No. 488, a Legendary Psychic type, 1.5 m and 85.6 kg, down to 580 points since Generation IX. Both debuted in Generation IV on twin islands off Sinnoh.

Here is the full file on both, with every number cross-checked between Bulbapedia and Pokémon Database, and forum guesswork flagged as such.
Who are Darkrai and Cresselia?
Darkrai and Cresselia are two Generation IV Pokémon, introduced in 2006 with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Darkrai causes nightmares, Cresselia dispels them. The games put them on neighbouring islands off Canalave City, built as mirror images of each other: Newmoon Island for Darkrai, Fullmoon Island for Cresselia.
One correction worth making straight away, because the error is everywhere: the two do not share a status. Darkrai is Mythical, handed out through events. Cresselia is Legendary, caught in-game. People treat them as a matched pair, but the way you obtain them has never been the same.
Another useful nuance: "lunar duo" is a fan term, and Bulbapedia says so plainly. The games themselves stick to Pokédex entries and the geography of the two islands, which is enough to set up the contrast.
Darkrai, the Pitch-Black Pokémon

Darkrai is No. 491, the Pitch-Black Pokémon, a pure Dark type. It stands 1.5 m, weighs 50.5 kg, is genderless, and its only Ability is Bad Dreams: every turn, a sleeping opponent loses one eighth of its maximum HP. The Ability and the signature move feed each other, which is rare to this degree.
Its base stats add up to 600, spread very unevenly: 135 Special Attack, 125 Speed, and only 70 HP. It hits fast and hard and folds under pressure. Its EV yield of 2 Special Attack and 1 Speed is unique in the whole Pokédex, no other species gives that combination.
Two details from the data file that almost nobody quotes: its catch rate of 3 is the lowest in the game, and its base friendship is 0, against 100 for Cresselia. The games literally code Darkrai as a Pokémon that does not trust you.

The Pokédex entries make a point most fans skip over: Darkrai is not malicious. The Pokémon Platinum entry reads "To protect itself, it afflicts those around it with nightmares. However, it means no harm." Self-defence, not intent.
Dark Void, the signature move
Dark Void is a Dark-type status move with 10 PP that puts every adjacent opponent to sleep. Its accuracy was 80% from Generation IV to VI. It dropped to 50% in Generation VII, and more importantly: from that same generation onward, the move fails outright if used by anything other than Darkrai or a Pokémon transformed into Darkrai.
That restriction was not arbitrary. In doubles, Dark Void put both opponents to sleep in one turn, then Bad Dreams drained them while Darkrai attacked. The combo dominated tournament play until the mechanic was locked down. In Scarlet and Violet, Darkrai learns Dark Void at level 66.
Mega Darkrai, the 2025 addition
Darkrai received a Mega Evolution in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, released with patch 2.0.0 on 10 December 2025. The stone that triggers it is the Darkranite. Mega Darkrai goes from 1.5 m to 3.0 m and from 50.5 kg to 240.0 kg, close to five times its original weight.
Its stats climb to 700, with 165 Special Attack and 130 in both defences, but Speed collapses from 125 to 85: the forme trades pace for bulk, and keeps Bad Dreams. That total ties it with Mega Tyranitar for the highest base stat total among Dark types, setting Arceus aside.
The design is worth a look: the body turns spherical, the arms become writhing tendrils, and the whole silhouette ends up reading as a giant eye. Bulbapedia lists the Dungeons and Dragons beholder and the Japanese star deity Amatsu-Mikaboshi among the likely inspirations.
Cresselia, the Lunar Pokémon

Cresselia is No. 488, the Lunar Pokémon, a pure Psychic type. It stands 1.5 m, exactly the same height as Darkrai, for a much heavier 85.6 kg. Its only Ability is Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground moves. It is always female, with no exceptions.
Its stats changed along the way. From Generation IV to VIII it totalled 600, with 120 Defense and 130 Special Defense. In Generation IX both dropped, to 110 and 120, bringing the total down to 580. Bulbapedia notes that of every Pokémon whose base stats have been reduced after release, Cresselia held its original numbers the longest: five generations.
Even after the cut, the profile is still a wall. 120 HP, 110 and 120 in the two defences, a Ground immunity, and access to Moonlight for recovery. On the other side, 70 Attack and 75 Special Attack: Cresselia does not knock anything out, it grinds.
Lunar Dance and Lunar Blessing
Lunar Dance arrived in Generation IV. Psychic type, status, 10 PP: Cresselia faints, and the Pokémon sent out in its place gets back all its HP, all its PP, and loses any status condition. A complete, literal sacrifice.
Lunar Blessing is newer. Introduced in Generation VIII with Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it is Cresselia's signature move, learned by level-up by nothing else. Psychic type, status, 5 PP, it restores 25% of maximum HP and cures status conditions for the user and its ally. Level 57 in Legends: Arceus, level 72 in Scarlet and Violet.
Darkrai and Cresselia by the numbers
| Data point | Darkrai | Cresselia |
|---|---|---|
| Pokédex number | 491 | 488 |
| Status | Mythical | Legendary |
| Type | Dark | Psychic |
| Height and weight | 1.5 m / 50.5 kg | 1.5 m / 85.6 kg |
| Ability | Bad Dreams | Levitate |
| HP | 70 | 120 |
| Attack | 90 | 70 |
| Defense | 90 | 110 |
| Sp. Attack | 135 | 75 |
| Sp. Defense | 90 | 120 |
| Speed | 125 | 85 |
| Total | 600 | 580 |
| Gender | Genderless | Always female |
| Catch rate | 3 | 3 |
The mirroring is clean. Where Darkrai banks its points in Special Attack and Speed, Cresselia banks them in HP and both defences. An attacker against a wall, on nearly the same total.
What are they weak to?
Darkrai, pure Dark, takes double damage from Fighting, Bug and Fairy moves. It halves Ghost and Dark, and it is completely immune to Psychic. With 70 HP and 90 in both defences, one well-aimed Fighting move takes it out of the battle.
Cresselia, Psychic with Levitate, takes double damage from Bug, Ghost and Dark, halves Fighting and Psychic, and stays immune to Ground. A head-to-head between the two is badly one-sided on paper: Darkrai hits her weakness, and her Psychic moves cannot touch it at all.
Where do the names and designs come from?
Darkrai most likely combines dark with the Japanese 暗い kurai, meaning dark. The name is identical in every language: French, Spanish, German, Italian and Korean all spell it the same way. Cresselia is thought to blend crescent with Selene, the Greek Moon goddess. Same story, the name is universal.
On design, Darkrai reads as the personification of the nightmare itself: the Germanic mare, various night hag figures, the shadow people that turn up in sleep paralysis accounts. The best documented parallel is the Slavic nocnitsa, a spirit that torments children in their sleep. It shares Darkrai's dishevelled white hair, shadow-made body and missing legs, and in some regions it can be warded off with a specific object, exactly like the Lunar Wing in-game. Darkrai was designed by Hironobu Yoshida and revealed in February 2007.
Cresselia comes from somewhere else entirely. The silhouette borrows from the swan or the crane, crossed with the Chinese xiānnǚ, the heavenly maiden of East Asian swan maiden tales. Given the lunar motif, the most cited candidate is Chang'e, the Chinese goddess of the Moon. Its ring-shaped wings echo planetary rings and the silk shawls those celestial figures wear. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex entry says outright that it resembles the heavenly maiden who created the Milky Way.
What is the Lunar Wing for?
The Lunar Wing is the item that ties the two together in the story, and it is the best-written stretch of the whole Sinnoh chapter. A sailor in Canalave City has a son locked in a sleep he cannot wake from, tormented by nightmares. Before dropping off, the boy mutters "Dar... Dark... Is watching me...". The father asks you to fetch a Lunar Wing from Fullmoon Island.
Cresselia is waiting there. You talk to her, she leaves, and she drops a feather behind her: the Lunar Wing. Brought back to the sailor's son, it dissolves the nightmare. Only then, in Pokémon Platinum, does the Member Card open the Harbor Inn and Newmoon Island. The game makes you cure the symptom before you face the cause.
How to get Darkrai and Cresselia, game by game

Cresselia can be caught. Darkrai, much less so. That is the whole practical difference between Legendary and Mythical, and it shows up game by game.
Darkrai:
- Diamond and Pearl: Newmoon Island, level 40, with the Member Card. That item was never distributed for these two versions. The only documented route at the time went through glitches.
- Platinum: Newmoon Island, level 50, with the Member Card distributed over Wi-Fi from 3 August to 13 September 2009 in North America and the PAL region. You need the National Pokédex, the Hall of Fame, the Cresselia encounter and the cure for the sailor's son first.
- Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Newmoon Island, Member Card again.
- Legends: Arceus: a one-off encounter in the Coronet Highlands, near Clamberclaw Cliffs, conditional on Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl save data being on the console.
- Black and White, X and Y, Sun and Moon, Scarlet and Violet: event distributions only. The most recent one for Scarlet and Violet ran from 7 to 21 December 2023.
- Sword and Shield: unobtainable.
- Legends: Z-A: by trade from version 2.0.0, and as a one-off catch in the Mega Dimension DLC.
- Pokémon GO: five-star raids, with 285 Attack, 172 Stamina and 198 Defense.
Cresselia:
- Diamond, Pearl and Platinum: Fullmoon Island, level 50, after the National Pokédex. Once you meet her she roams Sinnoh, which makes her a chore to run into again.
- Black 2 and White 2: level 68, by holding the Lunar Wing up on Marvelous Bridge later in the story.
- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Crescent Isle, a Mirage spot.
- Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: Ultra Space Wilds, the cliff world.
- Sword and Shield: Dynamax Adventures in the Crown Tundra DLC.
- Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Fullmoon Island, then roaming Sinnoh.
- Legends: Arceus: a single scripted encounter at Moonview Arena.
- Scarlet and Violet: Pokémon HOME transfer only.
- Pokémon GO: five-star raids, with 258 Defense, one of the sturdiest walls in the game.
With a catch rate of 3, anything that stretches the battle works in your favour: False Swipe down to a sliver of HP, a status condition, then Timer Balls after turn thirty. Against a roaming Cresselia, save before every encounter.
Darkrai and Cresselia in the anime and films
Darkrai carries the tenth film, Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, which opened in Japan on 14 July 2007 and aired in North America on 24 February 2008. The Japanese title translates as "Dialga VS Palkia VS Darkrai". It opens the Sinnoh trilogy, followed by Giratina and the Sky Warrior and Arceus and the Jewel of Life. The film's Darkrai is not hostile at all: it holds off the clash between Dialga and Palkia long enough for the heroes to play Oración.
The two meet on screen for the first time in DP104, Sleepless In Pre-Battle!. That Darkrai behaves like the one in the games: it returns at the same time each year and blankets the city in nightmares, until Cresselia drags it out of the shadows. In DP189, a Trainer nobody had heard of leads with a Darkrai that sweeps three of Ash's Pokémon in a row before falling to his Sceptile. That Trainer had taken all eight Sinnoh badges with that single Pokémon.
More recently, JN074 and JN075 put them back together: Darkrai shields Cresselia, takes heavy damage for it, and Cresselia uses Lunar Dance to heal it before restoring herself with Moonlight. It is the only animated scene that runs the relationship in that direction.
Darkrai in the trading card game

Darkrai has a long card history, but 2026 gave it its biggest spotlight in years: the ME05 set, Pitch Black, is built around Mega Darkrai. The cards and boxes are covered in our article on the Pitch Black ME05 expansion. Cresselia has never headlined a set: her cards go back to the Diamond and Pearl era but stay support cards.
Frequently asked questions
Is Darkrai stronger than Cresselia?
On raw stats, yes: 600 against 580, and an offensive profile against a defensive one. In an actual battle Darkrai also holds the type advantage, since its Dark moves hit Cresselia's weakness while her Psychic moves do nothing to it.
Can you get a shiny Darkrai or Cresselia?
Shiny forms exist for both. Availability depends on the title and the distribution: several recent scripted encounters are shiny-locked, and Pokémon GO stays the most accessible route during the raid waves dedicated to them.
Why is Cresselia always female?
It is hard-coded, with no exception and no in-game explanation. Darkrai, by contrast, is genderless. Nothing in the Pokédex entries justifies the choice, it belongs to the character design.
Are Darkrai and Cresselia related to Giratina or Arceus?
No. The Sinnoh creation trio is Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, all placed under Arceus. Darkrai and Cresselia are a separate pair with no creation link to them. They only share the region.
Taking it further
We engrave 29 Pokémon in crystal at Pokéled, and neither Darkrai nor Cresselia is on that list yet. Requests around the Sinnoh Legendaries keep coming in and they are noted. In the meantime the crystal light-up Poké Ball collection covers several other big Pokédex names, and if you want to place these two against the rest, there is our ranking of the most powerful Pokémon.
